Server Problems
11/29/2007 8:00:59 AM by bluerahjah

Hey guys, sorry for us being down for a couple of days. We had some issues to work through with our servers, and obviously we are up and running again.

A new game will start running on Saturday Dec. 1, so make sure you look for that.

Yes, to let all of you know, we are still working on the .NET version, and look to be ready for a few BETA testers come the middle of January.

If you guys have any questions or thoughts, send either myself, Auric, or Alarion a message, we'll make sure it happens.

Developer chat notes 2007-10-18
10/18/2007 8:19:51 PM by Alarion

We spent a little time going over some game mechanics and the direction we would like to take this game for the .net release. I am going from memory, but here is some of the things we discussed:

  • Turn/realtime discussions

    • Do away with the whole "action" concept

    • Gold will be gained over time, based on your income level

    • Gold will now be your main limiting factor

    • Travel time for Forces will be done away with

    • A time-based siege option may still remain. Once you lay siege, combat updates will happen in pre-set intervals, automatically

  • Holdings

    • More use for Masons. Since we are doing away with actions, their current purpose will be irrelevant. We discussed briefly maybe making these reduce the cost of Holdings when built. We still need more than one use for them

    • Farms will now produce food. As in, you will have a stockpile of food.

  • Economy

    • Taxation will be implemented. With high taxes resulting in a gradual, but exponential outflow of citizens. We did not discuss if a low tax rate will result in an exponential increase in population

    • we glossed over the fact the whole economy aspect of the game needs to be fleshed out

  • Forces/Units

    • Forces will require food to travel, and food to lay siege/fight. Food must be allocated to the force while they are Home. If they run out of food, they cannot travel/fight. Did not discuss if we allow them to travel back home w/o food

    • Rogues will be going in. We have discussed making this possibly a force in itself. One rogue would actually be a "force" in the eyes of the game. Needs much more fleshing out.

  • Misc

    • Attacking your own factionmates should have repurcussions. Maybe a reputation decrease?

    • Attacking your own guildmates should have repurcussions.

    • Implement the reputation system. Not sure what affects it might have, but we discussed at an earlier meeting that it would be cool to allow people to play good or evil, if they wish - with evil not being ridiculously encumbered by penalties. Auric had mentioned evil chars might have slave mines as a way to produce money, for example

    • Some system to prevent people from clubbing the ever-living crap out of the newbies. Maybe a ranking limitation (cannot attack someone x number of ranks below you, for example)

    • Institute a 24 hour protection scheme. The current scheme has made some players unhappy. There are 6 game days in a 24 real-life hour day. After 24 hours, you are not under the protection of the King anymore. Also, discussed possibly making any hostile actions while under King's protection immediately remove you from said protection

Alright, I am sure I have missed a few things - maybe Auric or Rahj will update these notes for me if they find I missed something :)

New Game is now Live
10/4/2007 9:25:38 AM by Alarion

Auric finally had a few moments to get a new game going: Battle of Hastings (1066). It is a 60 day game with 57 days left as of today.

There is also a game upcoming on the 15th of October: Conquest of Europe.

And with 3 of us now working on updates, the games will be less sporadic.

So get in there and start playing again. Finally :)

Latest News On v2.0
7/1/2006 5:33:48 PM by Auric

Well gang I've been working on version 2.0 pretty hardcore of late and things are going very well. With HamSamitch and Mile on board to build new worlds, things are really shaping up around here.

I'll be talking about how Forces and Units work in v2 in the next week. I've got a few final things to iron out before I say anything, but I think you'll be pleased.

I can tell you that *every* unit will have it's purpose.

06/08/06 Meeting News
6/9/2006 12:32:09 AM by HamSamitch

Hey guys we just had a very productive meeting tonight and we discussed alot of issues. We have set some timelines and I promise everyone that you will see alot of progress in the next month. I know beta 3 has alot of bugs and accouple disabled content, but that is all being put on hold until we get the new server ready. Which as Auric said before will help out with alot of the major bugs. The server is our top priority right now. Chivalry version 2.0 is just around the corner!

I also wanted to thank all the players that have stuck with us.

I'm Back!!!
6/4/2006 9:38:20 AM by Auric

Yes, you are reading this correctly, Auric is back on the prowl here at Chivalry. I've put together a team to help me complete this little gem, so hold on to your hats cause things are about to get busy around here.

More Soon...

New Server Testing Begins
11/10/2004 10:24:20 AM by Auric

Okay gang. If you are one of the old-school players or someone who has already spoken to me about testing the new server, please come visit me in Live Chat (IRC). Once there I will talk to each person and allow them access to test.

Keep in mind the first few phases will be pretty boring, but they need to be done.

Talk to you soon!

Testing of New Server
10/21/2004 8:49:05 PM by Auric

I'll be on the road until next Tuesday. Once I'm back I'll be loading up the new server for proper testing with the old test crew.

Expect it to occur just after Halloween. Phase one of testing will be character creation, economy, messaging and such. Once those have been tested/approved them we'll move on to Forces and Combat.

Then... it goes live. It's been a while but I've have to peacemeal my time here and there. Literally coding 15-20 minutes at a time. El sucko...

Thanks to those that have been patiently waiting for this. We're almost there.

Vacation Calls
8/9/2004 11:48:12 AM by Auric

Hey gang. I'll be off on vacation until the 21st. Work has progressed very well on the new game engine. I've got login working. maps, characters, messaging and such.

I'll probably have a new update to show by the end of August to let the testers beat up. Then hopefully not long after, a public launch.

More to come when I'm back from Vacation....

Latest Development News...

Looks like the base web server code is OK. I've begun working on the translation of the game engine over to the new custom server code.

Already have games, worlds and characters loading and running. The hardest part will be translating the web page code, since aspx is no longer an option.

The results should be very fast in the end.

Custom Web Server Testing
7/6/2004 1:18:35 PM by Auric

Phase one of the custom web server I'm building is complete. There is a test page available here:

http://chivalry.mythric.com:8000/stats.msp

The page isn't fancy, nor is it meant to be. It's a technical test meant to see if the new code works, and if it maintains itself. Feel free to refresh the heck out of the page to try and cause it to break.

If you're still confused... I've gone and written my own web server software. Bypassing the need to use other software like Microsoft IIS or Apache. So basically Chivalry will be it's *own* server with no middleman.

More to come...

What the %@*&#^$ is going on?
6/29/2004 9:39:21 AM by Auric

Hey gang,

So did I just fall of the face of the planet again? Yes. Why you ask? Well...

As some of you know I run my own company. So when work piles up I tend to get stuck working overtime hours to get things done. The same hours I might use to, say... eat, or perhaps sleep. Etc.

Chivalry is a labour of love for me that has been stuck on the back burner more than I care to admit. But it comes down to having spent all day programming to pay the bills, it gets hard to go home and do the same... for fun!?

Having said all that. I'm not going anywhere, nor is Chivalry. I'll always try to work on the game when I can and continue to evolve it.

So what's the latest?

The Reset Bug:
It's the worst bug of beta 3, and it sucks bug time. What causes it? Well, Beta 3 is written in VB and ASP.NET, running on Microsoft IIS (web server). When IIS feels like reseting itself, chivalry resets with it, and poof: the reset bug happens.

So under the current setup, that bug will happen whenever IIS resets. Which is whenever it feels like. So the solution I've come up with is simple:

I'm writing my own damn web server.

The result will be a chivalry server, written in .NET and running as a Windows Service. So the game engine will handle all page (html) requests and game mechanics. No middle man, no reliance on flakey web servers.

The result will be a server without random resets, and it should also be drastically faster. There are many other perks to this format that I'll not discuss today, but will reveal in time. The game will no longer be referred to as Beta 3, but simply become Chivalry 1.0

I'll begin work on this as early as next week. But understand this will not happen overnight. It will take a while to complete.

I promised several long-time players I'd keep everyone in the loop as this evolves. And I will.

More to come...

A Warning
3/16/2004 11:28:48 AM by Auric

With the second game of Beta 3 launching, beware that the economy has changed significantly. Make sure you pay attention to what you are doing.

Quick Tips:
The more your population is dedicated to forces, the more upkeep farms will require. (Less people in the fields working). Each force you build also costs upkeep now. Your garrison is the exception.
